Steve Smith
James Stephen “Steve” Smith, born April 30, 1963, in Glasgow, Scotland, built a 16-season NHL career as a defenceman, winning three Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers and finishing his career as captain of the Calgary Flames. Raised in Cobourg, Ontario, Smith starred for the London Knights of the OHL before being drafted by Edmonton in the sixth round of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. He joined the Oilers full-time in 1985.
Smith helped power Edmonton’s dynasty to Stanley Cup championships in 1987, 1988, and 1990, and he still holds the franchise’s single-season penalty minutes record of 286, set in 1987-88. He played in the 1991 NHL All-Star Game in Chicago and helped Team Canada win the Canada Cup that fall. Smith joined the Chicago Blackhawks the same year, spending six seasons in Chicago before signing with Calgary, where he was named captain in 1999. He retired in 2000 with 804 NHL games and 375 points.
Smith transitioned to coaching with the Flames in 1997-98 and went on to serve as an NHL assistant coach for the Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes, and Buffalo Sabres between 2010 and 2021. He later joined the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL, serving as the team’s interim head coach in November 2023. He and his wife have five children; his son Barron was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2009.
