Mark Giangreco
Mark Giangreco, born May 13, 1952, in Buffalo, New York, became one of Chicago’s most recognizable sports broadcasters across nearly four decades on the city’s airwaves. After graduating from Canisius High School in 1970 and the University of Dayton in 1974, he launched his broadcasting career at WING Radio before TV stints in Dayton and Louisville.
Giangreco arrived in Chicago in 1982 at WMAQ-TV, where he anchored sports for twelve years before joining WLS-TV (ABC7) in 1994. There he served as sports director and lead sports anchor for the 5pm and 10pm newscasts until 2021, also co-hosting “Countdown Chicago” with Janet Davies. He remains a contributor to ESPN Radio.
Giangreco’s work has been recognized with three Emmy Awards, the Iris Award from the National Association of Television Program Executives, two Peter Lisagor Awards, and two Associated Press Awards for Best Sportscast. He was named Chicago Father of the Year in 1996 and received the Dante Award from the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans in 1995. He has two brothers, Thomas and Pete.
