Tony Carey

Tony Carey, a standout athlete and leader, rose to prominence as the quarterback of Mount Carmel High School’s 1960 championship team before excelling as a defensive star at the University of Notre Dame. Nicknamed the “Field General,” Carey shined in high-pressure games, earning accolades like Most Valuable Player in the Caravan’s Soldier Field victory. His defensive prowess under Coach Ara Parseghian contributed to Notre Dame’s resurgence in 1964, with Carey making 46 tackles and tying for the team lead in interceptions.

A tenacious competitor on and off the field, Carey was also a two-time runner-up in the Notre Dame Bengal Bouts Boxing Tournament. Following his athletic career, he became a successful attorney and businessman in Chicago, where he resides with his wife, Joan. The Careys have three children and three grandchildren, continuing his legacy of excellence and dedication.
