Tom O’Malley has been a pillar of the Chicagoland sports scene for over 50 years, shaping generations of athletes and students. Raised on Chicago’s South Side, he found his passion for basketball at Leo High School, where his leadership earned him team captaincy and accolades as an all-conference player. After excelling as a student-athlete at Loras College, he returned to Leo High School as a coach, leading its basketball team to numerous championships, including a national Catholic League title.
Tom’s coaching journey extended to Reavis and Evergreen Park High Schools before his celebrated tenure at Saint Xavier University, where he led the Cougars to 14 NAIA Basketball Tournament appearances over 25 years. He accumulated 815 wins and left an indelible mark on college basketball, mentoring countless players and future coaches.
Beyond basketball, Tom had a passion for softball, earning induction into the Chicago 16-inch Softball Hall of Fame. Married to his wife, Carol, with three children and 13 grandchildren, Tom O’Malley’s legacy is defined by his profound impact on sports and the lives of those he inspired.
