Class of 2009
Tom Mitchell

For twenty-six years, the sidelines of Brother Rice High School were commanded by a coaching legend whose impact extended far beyond the gridiron. A Mount Carmel High School graduate who played for the Caravan from 1956 to 1958, Tom Mitchell’s journey in football leadership began with coaching stints at his alma mater and Marian Catholic before finding his true home with the Crusaders.

Beginning as an assistant coach in 1965, Mitchell took the helm as head coach in 1967 and proceeded to build a dynasty at Brother Rice. His remarkable tenure produced an impressive record of 180 wins against just 78 losses, including two Prep Bowl championships in 1975 and 1980. The pinnacle of his coaching career came in 1981 when he guided his team to the Class 6A State of Illinois title, followed by a strong second-place finish in 1985.

A DePaul University graduate, Mitchell’s dedication to youth development and coaching excellence earned him induction into three prestigious Halls of Fame: Brother Rice, the Chicago Catholic League, and the Illinois Football Coaches Association. His commitment to public service extended beyond the football field through his work with the Chicago Park District from 1994-2004 and later with the Chicago Housing Authority.

The Mitchell legacy continues through his sons, Tom and Tim, who followed their father’s path into both the Chicago Park District and coaching. Married to Marianne Sarsfield Mitchell for 45 years, Tom’s dedication to family mirrors his commitment to mentoring young athletes, creating a lasting impact that spans generations in Chicago sports and public service.
