Sonny Parker’s love for basketball began on the neighborhood courts of Little Village. His early start primed him for his time at Farragut High School where he quickly emerged as one of the city’s premier players, earning All-City, All-State, and All-Public League honors. His impact at Farragut left such a mark that he was later enshrined in the school’s Hall of Fame, along with the Chicago Public Schools Hall of Fame and the Illinois High School Basketball Hall of Fame.

After graduation, Parker moved on to Mineral Area College, where his influence grew even stronger. In two years, he became the school’s all-time leading scorer, a two-time NCAA All-American, and the 1973 Conference and Region Player of the Year. He led his team to a conference championship and was later honored with induction into both the Mineral Area College Hall of Fame and the National Junior College Hall of Fame. By the time he graduated, Parker was among the most sought-after transfers in the country.

Parker chose Texas A&M, where his game reached new heights under coach Shelby Metcalf. In just two seasons, he led the Aggies to back-to-back Southwest Conference championships and two NCAA tournament appearances. Twice named SWC Player of the Year, Parker was also selected as team MVP, earned All-American recognition, and joined the SWC All-Decade Team. Averaging more than 20 points per game his senior year, Parker left A&M as one of the most celebrated players in program history and was inducted into the Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.

In 1976, Parker was selected in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors. Over six seasons, he became a reliable scorer and defender, helping guide the team to multiple playoff appearances. Though his professional career eventually came to a close, Parker’s true legacy was just beginning.

In 1990, Parker returned home to Chicago and founded the Sonny Parker Youth Foundation. Built on his belief that young people need opportunity, structure, and mentorship, the foundation provides year-round educational, recreational, and athletic programs for students from kindergarten through high school. Its initiatives range from tutoring and college prep to basketball training and mentorship panels led by former NBA players and community leaders. The foundation’s Basketball Academy and Chicago Select AAU team have become cornerstones of youth development in the city, combining elite competition with life skills and academic support.

More than three decades later, Parker remains hands-on as president of the foundation, serving as both mentor and advocate. His work has touched the lives of thousands of young people, creating a safe and empowering environment rooted in the same city where his journey began.
