The Baylor Bears’ ascent to their first National Championship in 2021 under the leadership of Scott Drew marked a historic milestone, solidifying their place in college basketball history. In his 19th season, Drew, as the Big 12’s longest-tenured head coach, has amassed a school-record 370 victories, showcasing remarkable consistency and success. With nine NCAA Tournament appearances, five Sweet 16 berths, and three trips to the Elite Eight over the past 14 seasons, Drew has transformed Baylor into a perennial contender. Under Drew’s guidance, Baylor has achieved significant milestones, including the program’s first No. 1 national ranking in 2017, a Big 12 Conference-record 23-game winning streak in 2019-20, and an entire season ranked in the nation’s top-3 in 2021. The Bears’ consistent success has placed them among the elite programs in college basketball, earning them a spot alongside powerhouse teams like Duke, Gonzaga, and Kansas. Drew’s coaching prowess extends beyond on-court success, as evidenced by his ability to develop All-America players and garner coaching accolades. With 11 players earning All-America recognition in the last 14 seasons, including the program’s first consensus first-team All-America, Drew’s impact on player development is undeniable. His coaching achievements have been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Basketball Times National Coach of the Year in 2017 and the NBC Sports National Coach of the Year in 2020, along with consecutive Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year honors. Rooted in a rich basketball heritage, Drew’s upbringing in a basketball family, with his legendary father Homer Drew and NBA player-turned-coach brother Bryce Drew, has undoubtedly influenced his coaching philosophy and approach. Alongside his wife Kelly, Drew continues to leave an indelible mark on the basketball world, shaping the lives of players and inspiring future generations of coaches.
