Class of 2025
Ryan Dempster
Chicago Cubs

Ryan Dempster’s 16-year Major League career was defined by both versatility and personality, a rare combination that made him one of the game’s most reliable arms and most beloved figures. A two-time All-Star and 2013 World Series champion, Dempster carved out a place in baseball history as a pitcher who thrived in nearly every role while leaving a lasting connection with the fans who cheered him.
Born in Sechelt, British Columbia, Dempster’s path to the majors began with the Texas Rangers in 1995 before being traded to the Florida Marlins a year later. He made his big-league debut in 1998. By 2000, he emerged as one of the National League’s rising young pitchers, winning 14 games and earning his first All-Star selection. After a midseason trade in 2002, he spent a year and a half with the Cincinnati Reds, continuing to build his reputation as a steady starter.
Dempster’s career took a new direction in 2004 when he signed with the Chicago Cubs following Tommy John surgery. His Cubs debut came on August 1, 2004, and by the following season he had reinvented himself as a dominant closer. In 2005, he converted 33 of 35 save opportunities, including a then-franchise record 19 in a row. He followed that success with 24 and 28 saves in the next two seasons, giving the Cubs a level of stability in the bullpen they had long been searching for.
In 2008, Dempster transitioned back into the starting rotation, proving his versatility once again. That season he won a career-high 17 games, earned his second All-Star nod, and helped lead the Cubs to a division title. Over the next five years, he became the team’s most dependable arm, leading the Cubs in wins, starts, and strikeouts multiple times. In 2011, he tied for the major league lead with 34 starts, underscoring his durability and value to the team.
Dempster’s time with the Cubs came to a close in July 2012 when he was traded to the Texas Rangers in a deal that, fittingly, brought future ace Kyle Hendricks to Chicago. A year later, he joined the Boston Red Sox, where he capped off his career by helping deliver a World Series championship in 2013. Across his 16 seasons, he finished with 132 wins, 87 saves, and more than 2,000 strikeouts.
Off the field, Dempster was recognized as a two-time nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award for his leadership and community work. In 2019, his contributions to the game were honored with induction into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Today, his passion for baseball continues as an analyst with MLB Network and Marquee Sports Network, where his humor and insight mirror the same qualities that made him a fan favorite throughout his playing career.
For Cubs fans, Ryan Dempster’s legacy rests not only in his numbers, but in the bond he built with the city. He’s forever known as a pitcher who brought consistency, character, and a touch of joy every time he took the mound.
