Class of 2006
Richard Dent
Chicago Bears

Richard Dent is celebrated as one of the greatest defensive ends in NFL history, renowned for his ability to dominate games and terrorize quarterbacks. Drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 8th round of the 1983 NFL draft out of Tennessee State, Dent became a cornerstone of the Bears’ defense, helping lead the team to a Super Bowl XX victory in 1985. That season, he led the league with 17 sacks and was named Super Bowl XX MVP for his two sacks, two forced fumbles, and blocked pass in the win over New England.

Standing 6’5″ and weighing 265 pounds, Dent amassed an impressive career total of 141 sacks in 203 games, including a franchise record for the Bears. A four-time Pro Bowler, he also recorded 13 fumble recoveries, two touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Dent played for the Bears until 1993 before continuing his career with the San Francisco 49ers, Indianapolis Colts, and Philadelphia Eagles, retiring after the 1997 season.

After football, Dent became a partner in a telecommunications firm, started his own consulting business, and served as the Chicago Bears’ assistant defensive line coach. Actively involved in community work, he founded the “Make a Dent” Foundation and serves on boards for organizations such as the National College Foundation and the Chicago Park District. Inducted into the Illinois College Hall of Fame, Dent’s legacy extends beyond the field to his commitment to youth programs and literacy initiatives.
