Pat Fitzgerald, a 2008 College Football Hall of Fame inductee, transformed from a reluctant participant in Pee Wee Football to a dominant linebacker and leader for Northwestern University. A Sandburg High School graduate from Orland Park, he led the Wildcats to the 1995 Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl appearance, anchoring the nation’s top-ranked scoring defense. Fitzgerald earned back-to-back Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year awards and multiple All-American honors, finishing his career with 299 tackles, including 20 for loss.
After briefly playing with the Dallas Cowboys, Fitzgerald shifted to coaching, eventually becoming Northwestern’s youngest head coach in 2006. Known for instilling citizenship and academic excellence, he revitalized the program, leading the Wildcats to consistent success. Fitzgerald, along with his wife Stacy and their three sons, Jack, Ryan, and Brendan, resides near the university, continuing his legacy as a role model on and off the field.
