Mike Rabold’s dedication to football and community remains an enduring legacy despite his life being tragically cut short. From his early days as a standout guard at Fenwick High School to his collegiate success at Indiana University, Mike left an indelible mark on the Midwest.
At Indiana, Mike excelled as a versatile player on both offense and defense, earning the Freshman MVP award and becoming a team captain by 1958. His stellar performances, including leading the Hoosiers to their first winning season since 1947, earned him accolades such as the Team MVP and All-Star Game selections.
Drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1959, Mike’s professional career included stints with the Cardinals, Vikings, and Bears. In 1963, he played a pivotal role in the Bears’ NFL Championship victory. Following his playing career, Mike became a part-time scout for the Bears while also championing high school sports and contributing to Indiana University’s athletic programs.
Mike’s untimely death at 33 cut short a life filled with accomplishments, but his memory lives on. Tributes include inductions into multiple Hall of Fames and the establishment of the Mike Rabold Scholarship Award. His legacy as a courageous player and dedicated teammate continues to inspire.
