Mel Thillens Sr., founder of Thillens Stadium, left an enduring legacy through his dedication to youth baseball. Despite his claim, “I’m a businessman, not a ballplayer,” Thillens’ love for the game was evident in his creation of a facility that became a “Field of Dreams” for young athletes. In 1938, he transformed a plot of land at Devon and Kedzie in Chicago into a premier softball field with lights, dugouts, fences, and seating for 2,000 spectators.

Initially designed for men’s softball, the stadium was adapted for Little League baseball in 1950 due to the impact of WWII on local sports. Over the years, it hosted countless young players, creating cherished memories for generations.

After Thillens’ passing in 1993, his family operated the facility as a charitable foundation. When financial constraints threatened its closure, the Chicago Park District intervened to preserve the stadium, ensuring its continued use for the community. Thillens Stadium stands as a testament to Mel Thillens’ vision and generosity, inspiring young athletes for decades.
