The quest for Olympic glory began on the ice rinks of Northbrook for Berwyn-born speed skating phenomenon Leah Poulos Mueller. A graduate of Glenbrook North High School, her early promise in speed skating led to a U.S. National Title and an ambitious decision to relocate to Holland and Germany to train alongside the world’s elite athletes.
Her international debut proved spectacular at the 1970 World Sprint Championships, where she captured silver, marking the beginning of a decorated 12-year career that would yield more than 65 Olympic, World, and International medals. As a three-time Olympian, Mueller’s pursuit of excellence reached its peak at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, where, as team captain, she secured silver in the 1000-meter event and impressive finishes in both the 500 and 1500-meter races. Her competitive spirit endured through the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics, where she added two more silver medals to her collection in the 500 and 1000-meter events.
Perhaps most remarkably, Mueller achieved these feats during an era of controversy, finishing mere hundredths of seconds behind competitors from the Soviet Union and East Germany, who were later revealed to be part of state-sponsored sports programs. Her accomplishments stand as a testament to pure athletic ability and unenhanced performance, setting a standard for future generations of Olympic athletes.
Beyond the oval, Mueller’s achievements continued to accumulate. She was appointed to President Gerald Ford’s Council on Sports and became the recognized “voice of speed skating” across major networks including TWI, ABC, CBS, and Turner Broadcasting. While building her broadcasting career and raising two children, she completed her bachelor’s degree from National Lewis University in 1986, followed by a Juris Doctor from Marquette University Law School in 1993. Today, she continues to serve her community as a practicing attorney in suburban Milwaukee, embodying the diverse possibilities that can follow an Olympic dream.
