Kirby Puckett, affectionately known as “Puck,” emerged from Chicago’s Robert Taylor Homes to become one of baseball’s most beloved figures and arguably the greatest player to come from the Windy City. His journey began as an All-American at Calumet High School, continued through Triton Junior College and Bradley University, before being selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 1982 MLB amateur draft.

Puckett’s impact was immediate and lasting. In his 1984 debut against the California Angels, he collected four hits, a rare feat that foreshadowed his exceptional career. His most iconic moment came during the 1991 World Series, when he made a spectacular leaping catch at the Metrodome wall to rob Ron Gant of an extra-base hit, followed by a walk-off home run in the 11th inning of Game 6, becoming only the ninth player to hit a game-winning World Series homer.
