Class of 2011
John Holecek

From the high school fields of Marian Catholic to the NFL gridiron, John Holecek exemplified determination and grit throughout his football career. His defensive prowess at Marian Catholic High School caught the attention of college recruiters, paving the way for a successful collegiate career at the University of Illinois. Despite a freshman year injury, John rebounded with All-Big Ten honors in his junior and senior seasons, anchoring a defense that included fellow standouts like Dana Howard and Simeon Rice.

Drafted in the fifth round, John defied expectations to play eight seasons in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers, and Atlanta Falcons. Overcoming significant knee injuries that required three reconstructive surgeries, he was awarded the 1999 NFL Ed Block Courage Award for his resilience. Off the field, John gave back to the community as a spokesman for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Western New York Children’s Literacy Program.

Transitioning to coaching, John became head football coach at Loyola Academy in 2006, leading the team to remarkable success, including a Prep Bowl title and multiple semifinal appearances. His passion for mentoring young athletes remains as strong as ever, and his impact on the sport extends far beyond wins and losses. John, his wife Patty, and their three sons continue to inspire by leading with character and perseverance.
