John Collins

“Irish” John Collins, a celebrated middleweight boxer, began his journey at Leo Catholic High School, where his athleticism and determination stood out. Initially excelling as a linebacker and team captain in football, he shifted focus to boxing, winning the 1980 Chicago Golden Gloves Championship. Collins quickly transitioned to an impressive professional career, earning 29 consecutive victories, including notable wins over Lenny LaPaglia and Kenny Whetstone. Known for his devastating right hand, he became a fan favorite nationwide.

Among his 34 career wins, 30 were knockouts, highlighted by his 1985 defeat of the undefeated Mark Holmes, securing the United States Boxing Association Middleweight Title. After retiring, Collins pursued a career as a union electrician while continuing to shape the sport by training fighters like middleweight prospect Tommy Brown. Residing in Chicago, he and his wife Mary are proud parents of five children: Meghan, Patrick, Kara, Eileen, and Ellen.
