John Calipari’s leadership brought Kentucky basketball to new heights in his third year as head coach. Guiding the Wildcats to their eighth national championship and 15th Final Four, Calipari became one of only two coaches to lead three different schools to the Final Four (UMass, Memphis, and Kentucky). Known for his defensive strategies, his team finished the season as the nation’s top-ranked in field-goal percentage defense and blocked shots.
Despite losing three players from the 2011 Final Four team, Calipari recruited a top-ranked class, including Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who played pivotal roles in Kentucky’s NCAA-record-tying 38 wins and SEC dominance. The team secured a perfect 16-0 conference record, the SEC Championship, and a title-clinching run in the NCAA tournament.
Since joining Kentucky in 2009, Calipari has sustained success, guiding the team to multiple championships and milestones, including his 500th career on-court win. His coaching accolades include Naismith National Coach of the Year twice and recognition as Sports Illustrated’s National Coach of the Year in 2009. Beyond Kentucky, his resume features impactful tenures at Memphis, UMass, and a stint in the NBA with the New Jersey Nets.
