Jeff Joniak, one of the most exciting broadcast voices of the National Football League, enters his 19th season behind the microphone as the play-by-play announcer of the Chicago Bears on WBBM Newsradio 780 and 105.9 FM. An award-winning broadcast journalist, Jeff has hosted the Chicago Bears game-day broadcasts since 1997, serves as WBBM Newsradio 780 and 105.9 FM’s Director of Sports Operations and maintains his afternoon drive time sports anchor shifts. He also hosts “The Bears Coaches” radio show with Bears head coach Matt Nagy, and “Bears All-Access” each week on 670 The Score. On game days, Joniak, Tom Thayer, and Lou Canellis co-host Bears-produced television shows, “Bears Game Day Live” and “Bears Game Night” Live on Fox. During the season, Jeff also pens his “Joniak’s Journal” and weekly “Keys to the Game” features on wbbm780.com and “Game Previews” with Thayer on Chicagobears.com Jeff emcees a number of charitable events throughout the year, including the Lurie Children’s Hospital annual fundraiser. Joniak and the Bears Radio staff earned the Peter Lisagor Award, six times including 2007, 2009, and 2011. He has received multiple Associated Press “Best Sports Reporting” awards, the Silver Dome Award for “Best Play-by-Play” in 2006, and in 2013 as “Best Sportscaster”, and 2018 for his Joniak’s Journal, as well as regional RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Awards in 2007, 2009, and 2013. Jeff has also earned Chicago Midwest Emmy Awards for Bears television shows. Before joining the Chicago Bears media crew, Jeff co-hosted broadcasts for the Chicago Bulls during the championship years from 1991-1996. His first broadcasting job was at Sports Phone in Chicago, followed by stops at the Tribune Radio Network, Illinois News Network, CLTV, and Metro Networks where he started the sports department. It was at the old WMAQ Radio that Jeff became Sports Director, worked on Bulls broadcasts, anchored morning drive, and started with the Bears as the co-host of pre-game and post-game shows. He is a 1980 graduate of Hersey High School in Arlington Heights; he’s recently been named one of the school’s Distinguished Alumni and a 1984 Broadcast Journalism graduate of Iowa State University.
