Glen "Doc" Rivers

Glen “Doc” Rivers, a Maywood native, built an extraordinary basketball career as both a player and a coach. Known for his high school basketball talent at Proviso East and his collegiate success at Marquette University, Doc was dubbed “Doctor J.” Drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 1983, he played 13 NBA seasons, including stints with the Clippers, Knicks, and Spurs, earning accolades like NBA All-Star in 1988.

Rivers transitioned to coaching and achieved monumental success. As the head coach of the Boston Celtics, he led the team to its first championship in 22 years in 2008. Known for his intelligence, humility, and leadership, Rivers earned prestigious awards, including the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, and co-authored a book on his playing and coaching career.

A dedicated family man, Rivers and his wife Kris have raised college-athlete children, including Jeremiah and Callie. From his early days in Maywood to his championship win in Boston, Doc Rivers exemplifies excellence and continues to inspire in both the basketball world and Chicagoland.
