George Perles, a Detroit native and Western High School graduate, achieved legendary status as both a college and professional football coach. After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan State University (MSU), he embarked on a career that included serving as MSU’s head football coach. Under his leadership, the Spartans won two Big Ten titles, a Rose Bowl victory in 1988, and multiple accolades, including being named National Coach of the Year.
Before MSU, George gained prominence in the NFL as the defensive line coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he played a pivotal role in developing the iconic “Steel Curtain” defense. This legendary unit helped the Steelers secure four Super Bowl titles in the 1970s. His contributions to football extended beyond coaching; George served as MSU’s athletic director and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
Committed to community and public service, George co-founded the Motor City Bowl, transforming it into a major Detroit tradition. He also served as a trustee at MSU and ran for governor of Michigan, leaving a lasting legacy both on and off the field.
