Eugene Lenti, a legendary figure in collegiate softball, transformed DePaul University’s program during his remarkable 28-year tenure as Head Coach. His impressive record of 1,015 wins and four Women’s College World Series appearances established DePaul as one of only five programs since 1999 to achieve such consistent excellence at the highest level.
Under Lenti’s leadership, DePaul’s softball program became synonymous with both athletic and academic achievement. His teams claimed 11 regular season conference championships and made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances. The program produced 22 All-Americans and maintained exceptional academic standards, with 29 Academic All-Americans and 178 students earning academic distinction at the conference level.
Inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of
Fame in 2008, Lenti’s impact extended beyond wins and losses. He emphasized teaching both “the game of softball and the game of life,” instilling values of responsibility and accountability in his players. His excellence in coaching was repeatedly recognized, including honors as NFCA National Coaching Staff of the Year and C-USA Softball Coach of the Decade. As the third member of his family inducted into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame, Lenti’s legacy represents a remarkable contribution to both DePaul University and the broader softball community.
