Edmund L. “Ed” Kelly, a distinguished figure in Chicago’s sports and civic landscape, left an enduring legacy spanning over six decades. As the longtime General Superintendent of the Chicago Park District, he spearheaded transformative projects like the renovation of Soldier Field and the creation of the Chicago Park District Boxing Program, which became the largest in the nation. A former athlete himself, Kelly excelled in basketball and boxing and even served as a Marine aerial gunner in World War II. His dedication extended to coaching, fundraising for various causes, and creating opportunities for underserved youth through sports and education. His lifelong commitment to public service and sports solidified his place as a revered leader and advocate in the community.
