Dan Shannon

Dan Shannon, a graduate of Mount Carmel High School, made his mark as a standout fullback on one of Illinois’ greatest high school football teams, averaging 11 yards per carry and earning city championship honors. At the University of Notre Dame, Shannon was a four-year starter, playing left end and linebacker. He captained the team his senior year and earned All-American honors.

Shannon is best remembered for a game-changing tackle in Notre Dame’s upset victory over #1 Oklahoma, a play hailed as one of the most iconic in Notre Dame football history. Known for his versatility, Shannon contributed to numerous victories by catching passes, recovering fumbles, and making key defensive plays.

After his football career, Shannon worked as a CPA with the Peter Shannon Company and served as President of the Chicago Park District and Secretary of the Illinois Racing Board. He also served as President of the Notre Dame Monogram Club. Shannon now resides in Scottsdale, Arizona, with his wife, Kitty, and remains a celebrated figure in football and community leadership.
