Born in Pittston, Pennsylvania, the son of an Italian immigrant coal miner, Charley Trippi turned to sports to forge a different path and forged one of the most remarkable careers in football history. After starring at the University of Georgia, where he led the Bulldogs to a national championship and won the 1943 Rose Bowl MVP, the Maxwell Award, and unanimous All-America honors in 1946, Trippi was among the most coveted players in the country. The Chicago Cardinals signed him to a then-unprecedented $100,000 contract, the most lucrative deal in pro football history at the time, completing owner Charles Bidwill’s celebrated “Million Dollar Backfield.”
A true “quintuple-threat,” Trippi ran, passed, caught, punted, and played defense with equal effectiveness throughout his nine seasons in Chicago. In the 1947 NFL Championship Game, playing on an icy field in basketball shoes for better traction, he totaled 206 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown run and a 75-yard punt return, to lead the Cardinals to a 28–21 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. He led the NFL in all-purpose yards in both 1948 and 1949, was a first-team All-Pro in 1948, and appeared in three Pro Bowls. When he retired in 1955, his 6,053 yards of total offense were the most in NFL history. He remains the only player in the Pro Football Hall of Fame to have accumulated at least 1,000 yards each rushing, receiving, and passing.
After his playing career, Trippi served as an assistant coach with the Cardinals from 1957 to 1965 before pursuing a career in real estate. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968. On December 14, 2021, Trippi celebrated his 100th birthday, becoming only the second Pro Football Hall of Famer to reach that milestone.
