From the baseball diamonds of Berwyn to the boardrooms of charitable organizations, few have demonstrated such versatility in success as Chicagoland’s own Bob Miller. Breaking into Major League Baseball at just 17 years old, Miller made history as the youngest player in the majors when he signed with the Detroit Tigers for an unprecedented $60,000 bonus, outbidding both the White Sox and Phillies. His remarkable 1954 season saw him pitch 34 games with just one home run allowed, and he still holds the distinction of being the youngest pitcher to defeat the mighty New York Yankees.
After stints with the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets, where he shared memorable moments with teammates like “Choo-Choo” Coleman under Casey Stengel’s leadership, Miller’s baseball journey included three years on Bob Hope’s Christmas tour and sharing 1960 MVP honors in the Venezuelan Winter League with future Hall of Famer Bob Gibson. But it was his post-baseball career that truly showcased his diverse talents and generous spirit.
Together with his wife Carol, Miller transformed his business success into lasting community impact. Their philanthropy led to the naming of multiple medical facilities, including the 15th floor Oncology and Dermatology Units at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the 16th floor Oncology and Breast Cancer units at Prentice Hospital. His leadership as Chairman and CEO of Major League Alumni Association saw membership soar from 675 to over 4,000 during his six-year tenure, and he shared the organization’s Man of the Year honors with the legendary Brooks Robinson.
The impact of Miller’s generosity extends throughout his community, from the baseball stadium bearing his name at St. Charles North High School to his service on 14 different charitable boards, earning him the Illinois American Red Cross Hometown Hero Award. Whether supporting Billy Pierce’s Chicago Baseball Cancer Charities annual golf tournament or receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards from various organizations, Miller’s legacy proves that wherever he goes, positive change follows.
