Class of 2006
Billy Pierce
Chicago White Sox
George L. Connor Humanitarian Award

Billy Pierce, one of baseball’s greatest left-handed pitchers, carved out an extraordinary career spanning nearly two decades in Major League Baseball. Born in Detroit in 1927, Pierce’s meteoric rise began when he signed with his hometown Tigers as a teenage phenom in 1945, making his debut just after his eighteenth birthday. His true legacy, however, would be forged with the Chicago White Sox, where he played for 13 seasons following a pivotal trade from Detroit.
During his illustrious career with the White Sox, Pierce established himself as one of baseball’s elite pitchers. His achievements include throwing four one-hitters, pitching 51 consecutive scoreless innings in 1953, and leading the league with seven shutouts and 186 strikeouts in various seasons. In 1955, his dominant performance resulted in the league’s best ERA at 1.97. His excellence earned him seven All-Star selections and garnered MVP consideration, finishing third in voting twice.
Pierce concluded his remarkable career with the San Francisco Giants from 1961-64, helping them clinch the pennant in 1962 and showcasing his legendary change-up and curve ball in a memorable World Series appearance against the Yankees. His final statistics tell the story of his dominance: a 211-169 record, 1,999 strikeouts, and a 3.27 ERA across 585 games. The White Sox honored his contributions by retiring his #19 jersey in 1987, and in 2000, he was named to their Team of the Century. Beyond baseball, Pierce continues to give back to the community as head of Chicago Baseball Cancer Charities, demonstrating the same dedication off the field that made him a legend on it.
