Class of 2008
Bill Self
Ray Meyer College Coach of the Year

Bill Self, the head basketball coach at the University of Kansas, has established himself as one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history. In his first five seasons at Kansas, Self compiled a 142-32 record, including an 81.6% winning percentage—the highest of any previous KU coach. In 2008, he led Kansas to its third NCAA title and fifth national championship overall, with previous titles in 1922, 1923, 1952, and 1988.

Self has guided the Jayhawks to remarkable achievements, including four Big 12 regular season titles, three conference tournament titles, and three NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearances in five years (2004, 2007, and 2008). His 2007-08 team posted 37 wins, the most in school history, and he was named the 2006 Big 12 Coach of the Year.

Over his career, Self has coached at Tulsa, Illinois, and Kansas, amassing 23 or more wins in each of his last 10 seasons, including 20-plus wins in 11 of his last 12 years. His head coaching journey began at Oral Roberts in 1994, and he later took over at Tulsa in 1998, before moving to Illinois and then Kansas in 2003. With a Final Four appearance and multiple conference championships under his belt, Self continues to be a dominant force in college basketball.
