Class of 2011
Barry Sanders
Gale Sayers Award

Barry Sanders, widely regarded as one of the NFL’s greatest running backs, earned the 2011 Gale Sayers Award for his invaluable contributions to football. A native of Wichita, Kansas, Barry showcased unparalleled agility and determination, reminiscent of legends Gale Sayers and Walter Payton. His unique ability to elude defenders made him a constant highlight-reel presence and a nightmare for opponents.

Barry’s journey to stardom began at Oklahoma State, where he shattered 34 NCAA records during his legendary 1988 season, earning the Heisman Trophy. Drafted third overall by the Detroit Lions in 1989, he quickly cemented his status as one of the league’s best, earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Over his 10-year career, Barry led the league in rushing four times, achieved 15,269 total rushing yards, and was a 10-time Pro Bowler. He remains one of only two players to rush for 1,400 yards in five consecutive seasons and holds the record for career total yardage without fumbling.

Barry’s humility and sportsmanship set him apart. He famously handed the ball to the referee after each touchdown, embodying class and respect on and off the field. Retiring in 1999 while still in his prime, Barry continues to inspire generations. He resides in suburban Detroit with his wife, Lauren Campbell, and their four children.
