His charismatic leadership and infectious love for the game set him apart. In 1962, O’Neil became the first African American coach in Major League Baseball when he joined the Chicago Cubs.

During his time with the Cubs, O’Neil’s impact extended far beyond the dugout. He was not only a coach but also a mentor, guiding young talent and instilling in them the values of perseverance and sportsmanship. O’Neil’s presence in the Cubs’ organization was instrumental in fostering a positive atmosphere within the team.
